Farmers || Future

I'm currently in Iraq, and have little over a year left in the military. When I get out want to start my own farm raising beef cattle, and a little bit of row crop. Would anybody be able to tell the steps I need to take to get started, other than just getting the land have a little bit already. Want to know about the buying and selling mostly, and if anybody has been in my shoes before, like trying to start a farm while active duty please let me know.

Thanks,
Matt

Hey Matt. Keep up the good work over there. I would suggest maybe contacting some close by neighbors and see if they would be willing to equipment share. That would be one way of keeping cost down. AS far as livestock I would start slow and look for good stock whether breeding or to feed out. Always theck with your Farm Service Agency they will have program info for you as well. Goodluck!!

I would first like to thank you for your service. I don't know which part of the country you are from but I do know that Iowa State and some other states in the midwest have some beginning farmer programs. I have also been in contact with the Practical Farmers of Iowa as they have a new program they are starting. If you google beginning farmer center they have links on their website to other programs that might help.
