Season is almost over. The barn has been raised, the grain is in and so is the hay. We are about 30% less yield than the previous year except for the vegetables - we had plenty of those for some reason. Cleared the fence rows for the fields being put to grain next spring - heck of a job. Had not been done in 30 or 40 years. I wondered how our predecessors managed it without large equipment!? Built some raised beds and planted 600 sft of vegetables just in time so as to not miss the season.
Disced, harrowed and seeded with barley and alfafa our best field. This is the last year for barley in this one and it will be rotated to alfafa and hay for the next 5 years. We have had unusual warmth and dryness in Grey Bruce these past 6 weeks. We finally had rain this week and things are growing nicely.
