Chopping Corn 2012

As of this season, we have chopped corn for 4 years. We have chopped in the rain, the snow, the mud and now the dust - and that's ONLY 4 years! Very hard to believe all of the variety in weather!

In past years, we have always just emptied the forage boxes into a big pile and used a bulldozer for packing it. Although it worked well for moving the silage and shaping a nice pile, it pretty much floated over the silage rather than packing it. Our silage always heated and we had a lot of…

Harvest Update

Wow!  Time has been flying by since harvest has begun on our farm.  Between driving the tractor with catch cart, running farm errands, trying to keep my house presentable, and going to weddings or wedding festivities, I haven't had very much time to blog.  Sad to say, but when I have been home, I've either wanted to just sit and relax or sleep!

Harvest has been going pretty good so far.  We started with corn harvest a few weeks ago and decided to take out our down…

Open pollinated corn over 100 bpa

I just finished picking my test plot of open pollinated corn.  I chose to pick by hand as it was only a 1/3 of an acre.  I feel as though the amish do not get enough respect, it was alot of work.  I picked it as I will be shelling and sorting it to hold back for seed.  That is the best part of open pollinated being able to keep your own seed.  I even have spiked some local interest in buying seed from me.  I was impressed with half the plants as they had good size ears and many even…

K2 Y4 what a year

It seems like this has been the longest growing season yet.

We hope to average 35 bushels on the corn and 20 on the beans.   It just never rained.   I told some one either Im the sinner or my neighbor and god just isnt that accurate.  Not even the stray storms came our way.

On the business end of farming we had to switch over to marketing our insurance bushels.  We look a lot smarter after todays price washout but should average $8 on corn and $17.30 on…

Today I was reminded...

... of how much I want to farm!  I've been so busy with my "other job" recently that I haven't been back to the farm in a while.  I made the trip today to change the oil in my truck and it just made me wish I was farming full time!  All in God's timing!

First Sweet Corn of the Season

Last night for supper we had our first pick of sweet corn and it was sooo good!

What made it even better is that we had some friends over and had in my opinion a classic summer supper - pork chops from the grill, sweet corn, apple pie and ice cream!  Can't wait to have BLTs and more sweet corn…

Fair Time Favorites

Last week my family and I kept busy because our local Franklin County Fair was being held.  There was only one day last week that between My Farmer and I, we didn't have to be at the fair - We joked around that we can only imagine what are fair schedule will be like when we have kids in 4-H!  Overall we had a great time and the weather was great for it.  Here is my Top Five Franklin County Fair…

Farm Friday

It has been a fast paced week here on the farm.  Besides keeping busy with loading hogs and spraying fungicide on our corn, we've also been participating in several things at our local county fair this week.

My "backyard" is starting to show signs of stress due to a lack of rain but yet, I remain optimistic about the crop.…

No Pasture Left in Southern Wisconsin

We've begun feeding hay to our beef cows since the pasture is completely gone. We haven't had any rain, beyond a few hopeful drops, since late May and now we can't find any hay that hasn't doubled in price.

Anyone know of a source for good grassy, beef cow hay close to southwestern Wisconsin. I'll take a semi-load!

It's going to be a long, expensive winter!

Farm Friday (Monday Edition...)

My Farm Friday post is coming a little later this week, or should I say last week, because My Farmer and I were at the Iowa Farm Bureau's state Young Farmer Advisory Committee's meeting all weekend.  This was our last meeting on the state board; we finished our three-year term at the meeting.…
