Defense: Agriculture's No-Win Strategy

As a proud Michigan State Spartan, I know defense wins basketball games. If you follow the game and Tom Izzo (top coach in the country in my book), you know that rebounding and great defense have taken our beloved coach to the best record in the Big Dance. We like to watch what Izzo does best – play one of the toughest schedules in the country, take some losses (even though we really dislike the recent Big 10 losses) and get teams to peak at just the right time.

We’re especially…

Smith Farms Update

Well, I recently resigned from my full time gig, started buying a few more cows, and going to try to make a living farming. My folks moved to town in April, and my wife and moved to the homeplace. We are the 6th generation in this house and to farm. We are excited and nervous about the opportunity. What's the worst that can happen, I have to go get a job, right?

I lost my grandfather in September, and have been helping my grandmother get squared away without him around. She…

Update Yet Again

Well, life sure must have some other plans for me. We lost all of our rabbits, we're down to three chickens, and due to various issues, we are moving to a neighborhood that won't condone having the varying fauna that I would like. The move is for the best, though. A family member needed help, so we are offering what we can by moving in. It will hopefully prove good in the long run as this allows us to save around $700 a month in bills. I guess we'll see.

Services you would like to have from your seed dealer.

I was wondering if you could help me. I have just started a seed dealership and currently sell Syngenta seed, Garst corn and NK beans. I have bulk bean system and seed treater. I was wondering what other services do you like from your current seed advisor and what services do you wish they would provide?

I have been thinking of running talc through the bulk and treatment system so it is already in the with the beans to improve flow in my system and in…

Grandpa farmed, Dad didnt

Hello, I would simply like to ask everyone their opinions on this, it's been bugging me for quite a while. I have big dreams of becoming a beef cattle/grain farmer someday and I was just wondering exactly how hard it's going to be to start this. I know tons about agriculture and farming but I simply do not have any land or equipment in my name like many new farmers do. (Around here anyway) If I did get any land in my name it would be 130 acres with 1 dairy barn and 1 smaller machine shed.… Continue

Air cart with corn planter experience?

I am looking to hook my corn planter to the back of my JD 1910 air cart and am wondering if anyone has done this or seen it done.  I will be using the cart for dry starter fert which should allow me to carry up to 8 tons of fert and plant 95 acres to a fill.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Starting Out, while trying to bid against big farmers!

Hello everyone,

I would like to ask you all how have you started out farming?  I graduated from K-State in agronomy hoping that I could use that like a job resume for picking up farm ground.  I have three 4000+ acre farmers around me, my Dad isn't large enough to split ground off for me, and I am trying to find farm ground to buy, rent, share-crop.  Whenever I hear of land coming up for lease the already established farmers beat any offer I can make.  My Dad and I have been purchasing…

Why Farmers Should NOT Speak Up

The new year typically starts with motivational tips, hype about resolutions and pressure to make promises of how we’re going to do things differently. Not me. I’m bringing an entirely different perspective on advocacy – a highly sarcastic view on why we SHOULD NOT tell agriculture’s story. Several ag folks from across the U.S. and Canada added to the list on Twitter and Facebook – you’re welcome to post your own comment in the spirit of some fun.

15. Agriculture has little economic… Continue

Channel Seeds, any good?

I was wondering if anyone has planted corn/soybeans/ and maybe milo varities from channel seeds.  My Dad and I have been planting Asgrow, NK, and Dekalb seed the past several years.  I have a friend that just became a channel seed dealer and I want to try to give him our business.  Can anyone help with any experience they might have had with their seed?  Thanks.

Don't throw those old manuals away

How annoying is it when you start a job on the combine or tractor and can't find the manual? well, I collect farm manuals and up to this moment have around 550 manuals on my computer and if you are stuck for information (FREE), just give me a call with the information you're looking for and if I have it, I'll send it back via email. Just enough to get you out of a fix you understand, don't ask how to strip down & rebuild a perkins diesel engine. On the other…
