Asphalt pavement for bunker silo's ??

Posted on December 30, 2008 at 9:16am 3 Comments

i was woundering if anyone has used pavement for their bunker silo floors i have a section of old roadway that i've used for a bunker and i seems to hold up fine the silage acid doesnt eat at it like cement does. just woundering if anyone has done this and what the cost and prep.. work would be compared to cement. i need to expand my bunk this year and wanted to know which direction i should lean to thanks

Thank you for your input. How is the weather in NY? What type of farming operation do you run? Thanks again.

Thanks for the input. I'll def. look into CAFO laws in Iowa. Really don't like to deal with the gov't anymore then I have to.

Having my eggs all in one basket has been a thought. I milk a few cows with my brother in law, so I'd have that to fall back on. Also will probably start renting some ground in a year or two to row crop, and would like to sell some hay if I can find some ground. Diversification is the only way to go, in my opinion!!

Not sure what you mean by "what are you thinking of doing with heifers ?".

As of right now I raise my brother in laws calves from birth to 2-4 mos old depending on how much room is available. Raise 40 a year or so now, so I know exactly what you mean about grouping.

I'd like to expand to 150-200/yr and raise them from 0-4/6 mos old. I could do this with little to no debt. Stay at that level for a year or two and get a reputation established then get a loan and expand to 350-400/yr. Then stay at that level and see where it takes me from there. At what age do you accept heifers and return them?

I think my biggest challenge is going to be finding a farm to work with, and selling myself to them. How did you get started? Are you raising hfrs for multiple farms?

Have a good one...

Hey, thanks for the add! I think I read on here somewhere you guys custom raise heifers. I'm wanting to get into custom raising heifers and just thought I'd say hi. Look forward to chatting!

I had a thought. Your niche could be whey-fed hogs. I tried some whey-fed pork once and it tasted different but good. You could really set yourself apart in this way and develop some very loyal customers. Let us know how you do this year.

we tried to get hooked up with the NCRS last year....they did not send the information...but I have looked up the information and now know when the deadline is....we will be shooting for the dead line this year...thanks for the info....I know that there are some solar books out there and I believe there is a guy about 7 miles away that might be able to answer some questions....we really appreciate all the info you have shared....will let you know what headway we make...may be a bit....our newest endeavor is the purchase of a herd of cows....thanks again

we only need power to run our well pump and a few lights at the horse barn and a few at the hoop barn we are putting up to store our hay and equipment in....we looked into trying to get assistance last year but could not get anyone to call us back or send us the information...we have so many questions but cannot afford to have a solar company rep come out to tell us what we need....where did you find your info telling you how to build yours....trust me, we would rather build our own but just do not have enough knowledge about solar energy and it components to feel confident enough to do that at this point....I can't imagine that we need a lot.....we do plan on moving a house to our farm one day and we want that to be solar also....at that point I am sure we will need the help of a solar contractor.....another reason we want to go off grid is that once we run the electric, three years later anyone on that road can tie into it for free....we do not have a neighbor in either direction for a mile...we like it that way....though we are friendly with our neighbors, we like our space...thanks again
