I just finished picking my test plot of open pollinated corn. I chose to pick by hand as it was only a 1/3 of an acre. I feel as though the amish do not get enough respect, it was alot of work. I picked it as I will be shelling and sorting it to hold back for seed. That is the best part of open pollinated being able to keep your own seed. I am at a loss for words as to how many young farmers beleive govt. farm programs help. Govt. meddling in our markets is what causes the roller coasters. As we see these all time high commodities we also have many high inputs. Yes many are far better off today then 8 or 10 years ago but will they be in 2 or 3 years? Yes I am a little crazy I have planted a trial of open pollinated dent corn. I am in the the southern thumb of Michigan and we have limited growing days as well as having heavy clay soil so our normal corn yields are around the 150 mark most years. I can remember in 91 in our area the good corn was about armpit high at harvest. I am in a unique position as I feel strongly against gmo crops.
