I'm a midwest corn and soybean farmer in Southeast Iowa. My husband, Nathan, and I work together on the farm and raise our four wonderful kids. We also have a custom farming operation, primarily planting and harvesting. We have been active on both local and state boards and feel its important to network with others, and educate the public about what farming really consists of these days. I look forward to meeting tons of new people via "Farmers for the Future!"

Sneak Peak to our Family Picture Session for 2009

I do family pictures every year, and this year we chose to use our combine for the backdrop. This photography couple did a great job.

Awww - I love the family pics. My husband and I have been discussing what to do for our family pictures on Nov. 3. Our 2-yr old decided he doesn't like cameras. He covers his eyes. I mainly think he hates the flashes - so we were considering outside pics. I think it might be difficult since our girls are only 5 months old - not sitting up yet. So? I don't know. We'll see, I guess. We'll let the photography decide.

Not that you really care - but I watched an episode on TLC last night about this group that moved a house in Washington, IA. Small world.

Your family is beautiful!

We process butternut squash first by peeling it, then it is diced and put into 20 oz trays ( then shrink wrapped, then boxed up) for stores, or 10 lb bags for schools. We ship roughly 15,000 a week in produce to Umass, Hampshire college, many local elementary and high schools. We also do Boston Public, which is a lil drive for us, but we are involved in the Farm Fresh program and several other local Farm to School programs as well. There is a local farmer out her, Changs, that grows soybeans, he also grow something called chiberry? Seems to be very successful for them, they just upgraded like 3 million dollars worth of new facilities... crazy. We had just a siLLY amount of rain this spring as well, it affected everything around here, including the strangulaton of the tobacco crop, we have a 45 acre operation on cigar broadleaf, field tobacco. Last year a neighbor got hit with a supercell and lost 1.5 million bux, and this year it had to be harrowed again, all stunted because of the rain. If it "heads up" when the plant is only ankle high, its good mulch, I'd say, thats about it. You sound like you could use some of the herbicide we use, its actually like a super steroid, and makes the weed grow SO fast, they die, MUAHAHA, seriously. Good luck!

Through Lakeside Organics, we sell most of the organic produce, through Czajkowski Farm, which is the Big Daddy farm, we grow both conventional and organic, our largest crop is butternut and we fill the barns with it and process all winter for many schools, institutions and several large store chains, including Stop n Shop, Trader Joes, Whole Foods and more, so we stay busy year round. Hows the soybean crop this year?

hi the uk is cooling down after a cool wet start to harvest, its still cool but has dried up and all the harvest is finished in our area, leaves on the trees are changing colour and early mornings are feeling autuminal. this year we have mostly planted winter barley, apart from a little land we have which is prone to flooding from the river we redrilled after it was part washed out, with spring barley and all is safely gathered in and the straw baled.
barley trading is very poor so most of the grain will be crimped and fed back to our cattle.
we are still trying toget our heads around a trip to the states in the spring, perhaps you could advise on the weather conditions at that time of year and airports in your area. sorry to go on a bit, but also any events (maybe baseball or football matches or local shows) anything we could tie in with the trip. many thanks in antisipation Philip & Dawn

Hey Rachel - it is Val. I love all the photos you take. You do a great job. What type of camera do you use? I have done a few engagement photo sessions for friends and relatives and would like to get a better camera.

Yeah we do about 400 acres of custom hay harvesting and we also grow tomatoes and beans some years. Wow this year seems like there are alot of challenges. Every thing from hay prices, spraying for weeds and bugs, high fuel and fertilizer costs and this year water. It has been a rough year but we are doing our best. I post a forum about the water. I would explain it hear but it would take a while hahah.
