Ian & Val Plagge's Page

VIP Farms

We live in God's County (aka Franklin County, Iowa) where we raise corn, soybeans, pigs and kids! Ian is the 4th generation to farm in his family. Besides having our own rented acres and hogs, we also farm with Ian's dad.

We've both have had a passion for agriculture our entire lives. Ian grew up a mile and a half from where we live now, on a corn, soybean and hog farm and Val grew up near Stanhope, Iowa on a corn, soybean, hog and sheep farm. Even though our paths crossed growing up through 4-H and FFA, we really met at Iowa State where we both graduated - Ian in Ag Business and Val in Ag Communications.

We are happy to be living and working on our family farm, meeting others involved in agriculture, and enjoy getting involved with our community and different ag and community groups - Farm Bureau, Iowa Soybean Association, Extension Council & 4-H, Make A Wish and church.

We'd love to hear from any of you. We are ready to start the new year and can't wait for Spring!

Harvest Update

Wow!  Time has been flying by since harvest has begun on our farm.  Between driving the tractor with catch cart, running farm errands, trying to keep my house presentable, and going to weddings or wedding festivities, I haven't had very much time to blog.  Sad to say, but when I have been home, I've either wanted to just sit and relax or sleep!

First Sweet Corn of the Season

Last night for supper we had our first pick of sweet corn and it was sooo good!  

What made it even better is that we had some friends over and had in my opinion a classic summer supper - pork chops from the grill, sweet corn, apple pie and ice cream!  Can't wait to have BLTs and more sweet corn…

Fair Time Favorites

VIP Farms. Very cute! Val Ian Plagge initials I presume? Anyway, I am a beef and crop farmer. Corn, Soybeans, Hay and Black Angus. Spent a little more time on here today than usual and read some of your blogs. I am a fan. I love hearing other peoples' stories. Its enlightening to hear others triumphs and tribulations too. It keeps me going. :)

Iam happy to join this blog and keep learning and sharing experiences of farmers from the USA.
Iam an orthopaedic surgeon but with a bigger passion for farming I have been farming pinnaples but just started pig farming at the level of infrastructure setmup plus a few animals for now . I have a plan of expanding it and will be happy to learn from you.
I will soon post some photos from this end. Thanx

Well, I am glad that your crops are looking well. Mine on the other hand need a lot of help......mainly a little drier weather and a lot of sunshine. I have mid may corn in mid july, but the rest of the crops look really well. Don't be having too much fun as I am off to Mexico next week with the United Soybean Board.

Just wondered how the crops are looking in your neck of the woods. All our crops are up and its finally gettin dry enough to cultivate my corn and get the beans sprayed. If I don't talk to you by friday, Have a good Fourth and Tell Ian I said Hi.

Just was wondering how planting progress was up in your neck of the woods? We got done with corn on Saturday morning and are beanin now. We are hoping to be done by this weekend......with good luck and not a whole lot of rain. So, have you been getting the rains? Talk to you later. Bedtime.

Just got started planting last night, late this year. Most of the field work is done, we just a few ditches to fill in in the hills and some ditches to clean out on the river bottom. Other than that we are going full steam ahead....so then you are pretty close to being done then, if you have been going for a week? Off to the field.
