Welcome to farming I suppose. These are all of life's lessons and all you can hope is your mistakes dont put you out of business. Make sure you learn from what is happening. It may be the lesson that your money actually bought.
An open discussion:
It be Alpacas or Osterich or Elk or Emu, or pot bellied pigs, or registered Angus my experience is they are ponzi schemes. Only the peeple that sell the breeding stock actually make any money. People jump in the business of buying pairs so they can sell breeding stock. Eventually someone has to raise a commercial animal and sell its commercial products and make money. Alpaca would be no different the us buying cows. whats the wool worth, whats the meat worth, ect less what it cost to feed and house. Whats left over is my profit margin and what I can afford to pay. I cant buy $1600 reg angus cows. The kill plant doesnt pay extra for the registry papers. Most of the angus guys around around our parts are rich from some other business and the cattle are a hobby and a tax right off. Im afraid that may be the case of the Alpaca breeders. Dont worry it was Osterich in the late 80's. Sell the eggs , sell the meat, make boots out of the skins.... Sorry if I offended the Alpac folks it just my personal experience.
hello, how's the alpaca business going? I have a friend that is selling her whole herd of suri because of the economy, sadly they are also losing their home. Another friend is trying to sell a female for $5000.00 and has lowered her price to $3000.00 and still can't sell.
Thanks so much for your help, can I add you as a friend? I will keep in touch. Alpacas are the sweetest looking animals I have ever seen. And have been thinking of them for years, but thought I would never be able to afford to get into them. Now you have given me hope. Thanks Again, Jacki
Thank you , I will visit the sites you suggested. I live in Northern South Dakota, do you think they can handle the weather extremes here. our winters can get below 0 for several days with alot of wind at times....and our summers can get as high as 110 F for several days... I know they come from a mountainous region historically... But do you think I can raise them here??
I have been wanting to get into alpacas for several years..But have found them to be very expensive. Was that the case with you? What would it cost me to buy a few alpacas? And I heard they are susceptible to diseases that deer carry. That was another reason I was holding off. We have deer occasionally come through our place where I live. Where can I learn more? I would appreciate any help you can give me.
I am new to this group and it looks like you are too. Since we both need a little help getting our network going, I am going to add you as a friend if that’s ok.
