My husband is tired of the trucking industry and wants to farm full time. Does anyone have their success story to share? Did you finally just take the leap and do it? We have 84 head of beef cows and…Continue

I work side by side with my husband on our farm. It is rewarding and I love the animals, but it is extremely hard work. We both work during the week, he drives truck and I work 3 days off the farm...…Continue

The geese, Sandhill cranes and pheasants have been wreaking havoc on our corn fields, plucking newly emerged plants right out of the ground. Two-thirds of one of our smaller fields is nothing but…Continue

Whenever we get a new Successful Farming magazine in the mail, I check in the FFtheF section to see what's off the Network.
My husband, Terry always asks me when I check it what I've been whining about lately... LOL This issue was no different. I checked the quotes and I wasn't quoted. "Nothing." I said and made a face at him. THEN I looked at the article. Ohhhh... "Uh, I guess I am in here!" I said and handed him the magazine laughing. He is still going into the full time farming…

As of this season, we have chopped corn for 4 years. We have chopped in the rain, the snow, the mud and now the dust - and that's ONLY 4 years! Very hard to believe all of the variety in weather!
In past years, we have always just emptied the forage boxes into a big pile and used a bulldozer for packing it. Although it worked well for moving the silage and shaping a nice pile, it pretty much floated over the silage rather than packing it. Our silage always heated and we had a lot of…

What a busy weekend!
Friday - I went back to working outside the farm. Took the PT position at a previous employer where I work at a computer and output plates for printing newspapers. Happy as a lark. Job I love, good pay. Happy, happy, happy.
After working 8am-4pm, I mowed the lawn for 2 hours, made dinner and then drove to town to get the necessary provisions for my farm laborers (our 3 kids and their friends and significant others) to eat on…

I am sincerely hoping that fate puts a hold on a monsoon and month long flu for me during this calving season. Last year nearly killed me, I don't want to test the theory that it only made me stronger.
This year I hope that we are calving in the south pasture at my husband's Grandpa's farm. Grandpa John is 89 and a retired farmer. He taught Terry most of what he knows and gave him his old 1968 David Brown 990. He has taught me a little about calving over the last 2 years. I…

Is Terry still trucking or is he farming full time now? Do the two of you plan to expand your operation?

brad123 said… I am very sorry to here that.. Nothing is worse than feeling helpless while animals die and you try everything to save them.. Well I hope you don't give up on the cattle.. It will be scary for next year though.. Have you looked into sources of the scours.. Maybe from where you wintered cows, water, calving pasture? Maybe there is some type of drug for a preventative for your type of scours.. It is hard not to let these things bother you, my wife just about cries everytime we loose a calf. Well hopefully things improve
brad123 said… Have things got better for you during calving? Is scours still a bad problem?
