We're thankfully done, but there is corn still in the fields here in Southeast Iowa.

US corn is going to have to trade at a discount in world markets. ....Too much off grade moving into the market. I wouldnt count on anything going to waste.

We are finally down to 180 acres. There is quite a bit of corn left around here. More to the east. Some soybeans left around too.

We are currently done on our farm here in NE SD, but we are one of the lucky ones. By the looks of it there is somewhere around 10 an 15,000 acres of corn unharvested within about a 30 mile radius of our farm. I don't have any exact numbers but that…

I am finally down to 75 acers. I hope there isn't going to be another year like that again.

Just wrote up a blog item trying to give some sense of how much corn's still in the field around the country. Might be something like 500 million bushels, something of a factor in the markets, right? Here's the piece: Unending harvest: 'Double or no…

Buy from family on contract, as both my brother and I have found out FSA young farmer loan is a joke.

I don't know what to think of the decision, but our story about it on Agriculture.com was one of the best-read stories of 2009. It was a popular topic, so a lot of people sure must care about it. -- John

Ten questions for farmers

Worked up a little piece the other day about some of the poll questions we have asked farmers over the past year on Agriculture.com. I learned a lot from the process, as always.

Questions ranged from the practical side of things (how you'll save money next year) to the more philosophical stuff (What do you most like about farming?).

Anyway, there was a good response to these polls, and some insightful comments from farmers.

The polls are still "live," and you'd be welcome to chip in with your… Continue

Feeding the world

A new poll supported by a group of agricultural publishers from around the world asks your opinion for how we can best address global hunger.

Read the story, and take the poll: Global seeks solutions to feeding the world

Other ag enterprises

A good majority of farmers have a second ag-related enterprise, and there’s little limit on the imagination people bring to these enterprises, according to a recent Agriculture Online poll. Only 21% of the nearly 300 farmers taking the survey said they don’t have another enterprise besides the farm.

The most popular selections were seed production and sales (15%) and custom farming (12%). Other enterprises on the list included trucking, m… Continue

Your harvest photos: "Let's roll!"

I just put together a "slideshow" on Agriculture.com of a selection of harvest photos from our social network here. I borrowed the "let's roll" theme from Shane Newbrough's combine add-on. Seems appropriate this year, given all the challenges a lot of you have faced.

I hope this coverage helps our Web site visitors, and the general public, better understand what's happening out on the land this fall.

Thanks to ever… Continue

Thanks John! Yes we met on this site! We started leaving commets for each other and one day he decided he was going to fly to NY to meet me in person! I was super nervous and didnt know what to think, but as soon as he walked off the plane, I knew right there, that we were meant to be together! He obviously did to, because after going back to MN after 5 days in NY he gave his two weeks notice and decided to fly me out to MN and we drove back to NY, that was in June of 09, in September he proposed and I said yes! I havnt been on FTTF in a long time but I decided somehow I would like people to know that we met on here! I would like to get back into my old habit of being on here more often, which will probably happen this winter, we usually dont do to much outside with the cows because of the cold weather! Well I thank you again for the Congratulations! It is really good to hear! Thanks again!

Thanks John...for all you do to make the show what it is...."you da man!"

Geez, was down to the recording studio in Des Moines today to do some audio voiceovers for upcoming episodes of the "Machinery Show". The crew had me in front of a green screen. 1st time ever done that before. Maybe they can make clouds fly over my head like they do with Dave on the opening?? Fun stuff.

Thanks I appreciate it. I got on here to hopefully spread the word about california agriculture mainly the west side of the san jauquin valley. I'm not sure if anybody knows the situation there but it is not good. Congress has basically robbed of us our water to save a 2" minow called the smelt. My family has farmed there since the early 1970's and this is the hardest year i think we have had. I am a 22 yr old attending CSU fresno majoring in crop prod management. I have loved farming all my life and am very passionate about it. I have become even more passionate about it this year with everything that has gone on. Well sorry to ramble on, but I am glad to be hear and look foward to taking with everyone.

Thanks John,
I don't know how well a souther boy will fit in with all these mid-westerners. What little we have to harvest should be ready about early to mid September. We planted late because the wet spring, then didn't get any rain from mid May to July.
