Ethanol Research

I'm doing a research paper for one of my college classes and I decided to take a look at ethanol. I noticed a lot of articles and editorials saying how it seems corn may not have been the right…Continue

Cold Hardy Birds

My wife and I are trying to rethink an order for chickens we have placed. Out f our last batch of hens (25) we only have eight left. We kept an eye on them so we're pretty sure the loss is due either…Continue

Technology In Farming

With the times changing at an apparently accelerated rate, farming has somehow managed to stay with this flow. A friend of mine developed a program by himself that would help determine a watering…Continue

Update Yet Again

Well, life sure must have some other plans for me. We lost all of our rabbits, we're down to three chickens, and due to various issues, we are moving to a neighborhood that won't condone having the varying fauna that I would like. The move is for the best, though. A family member needed help, so we are offering what we can by moving in. It will hopefully prove good in the long run as this allows us to save around $700 a month in bills. I guess we'll see.

Update II

Well, things aren't looking too good for our mammal skills. We managed to lose both female rabbits within days of each other. The cause of death isn't really clear, though both ladies were about 3 to 4 years old. Now our next task is finding another female NZ or Cali to take their place. Our Americauna is no longer with us. He picked on our daughter one too many times and very quickly and somewhat messily ended up in a soup pot. His replacement is so far a much better animal around our pride…See More

Idiot Birds

My heart goes out to those people who can successfully free range their chickens in a relatively urban environment. I had our birds out today to try and kick start the laying, which hasn't happened in almost a week. I went back inside to relax a little since this 90+ degree heat has been kicking our butts. After a few minutes a neighbor came over to let us know her dog had killed one of our birds that had slipped into her yard. She felt a little bad and I told her it wasn't her fault; some of…See More

UpdateRabbitsWe're on our second attempt at babies for one of our female New Zealands. So far this batch has lasted twice as long. It probably helps that we have a real nestbox this time. Also, our adopted bunny is finally showing some growth. (A family in the neighborhood was forced to move, but the rabbit was running essentially wild. Another neighbor found it and asked us to watch it since we had food and such anyway)ChickensThe laying finally started about a week or two ago. They're pretty…See More

Feathers Flying

So we attempted to venture into the fine feathered world of farm fowl. Our first batch, though purchased from a reputable supplier, ended up pretty much being a bust. True, we did get about 30 or so lbs of chicken out of it, but our hens that we have left haven't begun laying yet. I know it's suppose to take up to a year, but I'm slightly impatient. I hate useless animals. The duck thing is working out relatively ok. I went out to the coop today and one of the ducks had a bloody eye, so now…See More

We have an order that we're probably going to have to rethink with McMurray. That's who we used the first time. Evidently stars don't like the Great Lakes climate :) so we're going to try to aim for more cold hardy breeds. Also, we are most definitely taking a break from roasters. Those birds eat like a herd of horses or something. Plus, they were overtly aggressive against our other birds so we went from 25 hens to 8 now :(

sounds like you've got a nice selection. which hatchery do you buy from? I think one of the larger ones is Murray McMurray. we either use them or our local co-op store most of the time. now our Amish neighbors have a good selection that they'll sell occasionally.

I have had chickens on and off for most of my life. I don't currently have any that are laying, but maybe I will again in the next year or so. my coop is one that was built 55 years ago out of recycled lumber from an old house, with perches that were saplings cut out of a fence row. it is far from pretty, but it has supplied 3 generations of us with the majority of our eggs since 1954! what types of birds do you have? we usually kept leghorns, but my last couple of flocks were rhode island reds and red stars. one of my friends is raising some buff orpingtons and I really like the way they look, so that'll probably be what my next bunch are. what type of birds do you have?
