Marketing crops for 2013

A guy I know, who buys a lot of corn, stated a couple of weeks ago that the last three years have turned good disciplined marketers into bad marketers.   He's right in the sense that in the last three years any forward sale has been a bad one.   I agree with him that selling grain should be about risk control and not about dollar maximization.  Those that can make the jump are better marketers and sleep better.     The business school people would say which do you want...  two identical streams…See More

K2 Foods, Oxford, Ohio

This is our first year farming. It will be a toe in the water as I will retain my day job in Minnesota and farm in Ohio. We are expecting to plant 100 acres of corn and 150 acres of beans. The spraying and combining to be hired out. Weve been preparing since we made the decision to farm in June of 2008. Its been the longest winter ever in anticipation. We have been lucky to play to our families strengths both my wife and I have extensive grain trading experience. Finger crossed with an average crop we will have a good first year.

K2 year 5 coming up

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 8:33pm 0 Comments

Ive been posting on this sight since just before we planted our first crop.   ime sure slips by quickly.  After last years disaster lets hope for a better year in 2013.

The biggest changes for this year are going to be in acres.   We were able to buy an adjacent farm a few weeks ago that will add  110 acres.  I then got on the phone and finally took the leap to call on some other adjacent land that would make sense to try and buy.  Its regular topic on how to get on more…

K2 Year 4 clsoing it out

I guess Im glad its over.  Truthfully, its hard getting psyched up for next year.  It was just a long year of radar watching.   This was our fourth crop.  Our yields have been on a steady down trend...  In successive years corn  222bu 158, 105, 39 bushel per acre by year.  Yes, that 39 bushels is not a misprint.  It just never rained from June to september.  My farming friends say "really"?   I just reply someone had a drought...  I guess Im the only guy with bad yields.  My non farming…

K2 Y4 what a year

Posted on September 17, 2012 at 8:17pm 0 Comments

It seems like this has been the longest growing season yet.

We hope to average 35 bushels on the corn and 20 on the beans.   It just never rained.   I told some one either Im the sinner or my neighbor and god just isnt that accurate.  Not even the stray storms came our way.

On the business end of farming we had to switch over to marketing our insurance bushels.  We look a lot smarter after todays price washout but should average $8 on corn and $17.30 on…

K2 Y4 "Raising corn in hell"

Apparently the farmer on CNBC used that quotable statement this AM.   Our crops have burned to a crisp.  We havnt been lucky enough to catch the scattered showers.    The discussion last night was if the corn would make 60 bushels or would we not be able to graze stalks with fears of nitrate poising.   The pastures are holding up for now do to a steady stream of investment and rotation, intensive grazing.   Im not sure how much longer the grass will hold up with these temps and no…

Keep your head up, we are in the same boat 25-75 bushels was about what we got here in Kansas.  Too much heat and no rain.  I am just suprised that corn made anything.  We had 100-118 degree temps with no rainfall.  Hopefully this winter and next spring we will get back to "normal"!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. No, I'm not related to The Maschhoff family. They employ over 600 people throughout the Midwest and I'm one of those lucky individuals. :)

In that field I was probably running between 4.5 and 5 MPH. The corn was standing well, and at that time, the ground was still solid. I steered, operated the header control, and the unload auger with my right hand, while videoing with my left. (This isn't something I'd recommend in every field:) It just happened to work in this field because it was straight and flat.
Thanks for watching! I really enjoyed your pictures!
That looks like a great looking pair of baldy calves!

I have enjoyed reading your maketing comments, and just wonder what your thoughts were on this ralley we have been having. I have been making some sales, but starting to look pretty top heavy. Where do you think we go from here? What about a spring ralley? Will unplanted wheat acres go to corn and beans( I don't grow wheat so looking for some direction)? Thanks and I hope you had a good year farming. Good yields and higher prices sure make it fun.
