cow/calf vs backgrounding operation

Lets weigh the pros and cons of having a backgrounding operation vs a cow/calf operation just in general. Which would be more profitable? Which would be easier to get started in? I'm from a dairy operation, so not overly familiar w/ beef animals. However, I can grasp the basics and am good with animal husbandry. JakeSee More

feeder calves

Hello,I built a 30x40 barn this spring/summer. I'm looking to utilize my barn and make money this late winter/spring. So here is my idea I'm looking for feedback on. I'd purchase a group of say 24 calves @ 250-300 lbs in Feb...When nobody wants them. Feed them until April/May and sell say 16 hd @ 400-450 lbs in the Iowa Farm Beurea Spokesman to people looking for calves to put on grass....When historically cattle prices peak. The remaining 8 hd I could easily background by rotational grazing my…See More

My name is Jake. I'm 20 years old and live in Northeast Iowa. I was born and raised on a dairy farm. My dad still milks about 20 cows and has a small farrow to finish operation. My brother in law milks about 30 cows. I started my own herd as a sophomore in high school, and run them with my brother in laws herd.

I went to a community college for dairy science and now I'm out in the big ol' scary world. I have been custom raising calves for my brother in law on my grandpas farm. Grandpa row crops 800+/- acres at 72 years old with my dads help. Grandpa is looking into retiring this year and I hope to take over part of the row crop operation and expand my custom calf raising business.

I'm a pretty laid back, easy going person. I hope to meet some new people on here. Anything else ya wanna know give me a holler.....

hey- sorry it's been awhile. School is busy, but almost done for the year! We got started with field work about 2 and a half weeks ago. Some people were planting already then! We are still working ground but will get our planter in soon. Hope everything goes well for you this spring. Keep me posted

Definately missed your post until now... Sorry! I'm an Ag Business major. But wish I could be in your shoes living the dream (farming) already! After graduation I plan to work for a seed company in North Central Iowa. Latham Hi-Tech Seeds is the company. I'm working for them now and love it! All the people are great and they still believe in providing that hometown service that many big companies these days lack. I like being able to give ideas and work together in teams that they really allow that to happen even though I'm only part time for now. Eventually I hope to farm though.

well I want to stay in Iowa...preferably on a farm somewhat near home, but anywhere in Iowa is fine. Since I am an evironmental Ag engineer and agronomist, I can pretty much work anywhere...even the DNR. I'm really excited to get through school and work in the world of AG

Hi Jake, ISU's really good I'm enjoying it and sort of sad it'll be coming to an end in the next year. You're right Nora Springs is northwest of Waterloo. Glad to see another Iowan on here!

they all come from one farms thats milking about 1400 this makes keeping track of the animals easy so some guy doesnt get back someone elses heifers. my in laws live around the corner from the milking farm and they raise them from birth to 3 months then i take them from 3 till 60 days before freashing . you might want to think real hard on going to 350 or 400 you would be a CAFO then and have to meet all requirements . thats why i dont want to get any more than 300 .. i know what a hassle CAFO is we used to milk 700 cows and had 700 heifers . only thing with getting them all from one farm is your eggs are in one basket make sure you have something else to live on like i also sell feed and do a little trucking

yes we currenly raise replacemet heifers we work on a per day board basics i have 209 animals right now but am buying a farm up the road so i can go to 300 head we also put up feed for a couple other dairyies and sell corn silage. what are you thinking of doing with heifers ? tip its nice to deal with a farm thats big enough that the calves come in fast enough so they are uniform in size to make nice groups

No, that will be a research and production site. I work with the sales team.

What type of nursery business exactly do you have? My wife was loves flowers, and was looking for something to fund her gardening habit, so she picked this up. She's sold at farmer's markets, and has done a wedding, with another 1 or so booked for this summer. To wet to work in the beds yet, but we put up the greenhouse today. She has several flats of plants started in the basement about ready to move out when the weather's fit. She's talked about expanding to start selling plants in addition to the cut stems, but not sure what the best direction to go is, she has a pretty small, basic operation right now. Maybe we should swap some notes sometime.
