About Me

I grew up in rural Ohio (Clark County) and my family still owns farmland in that area. (corn and beans land) I currently live in Denver Colorado and run a national farm management company so I’m a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. I am also an agribusiness author/blogger. I visit lots of farms in different areas of the country (sometimes the world) that grow all kinds of different crops. I have taken a recent interest in the local food movement and have been studying hydroponics in great detail. I believe that even large grain farms in the Midwest should diversify a small portion of their operation into local food production via hydroponics. You can read more about my company at http://agerco.com . You can read my blog at http://blog.alextiller.com .

Feel free to drop me a line or “friend me.”

To Buy

• The trick is to buying farmland is to find it before it goes on the market, and the best way to do that is through a network of people who would know the land is about to go on the market. To do this effectively, I suggest you....to read more, visit… Continue

In return for filling out my questionnaire, one of you will be selected at random to receive a $100 Tractor Supply gift… Continue

Agribusiness SBA Stimulus Package

Posted on March 24, 2009 at 2:05pm 5 Comments

For those of you contemplating starting a new (non-commodity farm) agribusiness venture, 2009 might be your year. On March 17 President Obama unveiled a multifaceted small business initiative to try and stimulate the small business economy with a major focus on unfreezing small business lending. Reactions to the plan were generally favorable, although I personally am not sure this is enough to turn around our economy.......to read more visit… Continue

11 Point Checklist for Planter Maintenance

Posted on March 20, 2009 at 1:04pm 0 Comments

A farmer is only as good as his equipment – and this spring, one of your principal pieces of equipment will no doubt be your trusty planter. Equipment maintenance is one of those “everybody knows” pieces of information, but planters require a fair amount of attention to prevent damage and poor operation thus resulting in poor yields at harvest. Here is a general checklist for maintaining and inspecting your planter, to keep it working smoothly for years to come – remember to check your owner’s… Continue

My wife came up with it, we were tired of the plastic ones breaking, and the kids wanted something that looked REAL, just like Dad's.

Alex, thanks for the welcome. New to this blog stuff, but added my 2 cents worth to a discussion about the breed of cattle I happen to raise. My wife and I both work off the farm, but have a small (60 head) purebred beef operation, and 5 kids...keeps us out of trouble. My wife is also doing an at home sideline business of die cast toy corral panels. This seems to be picking up interest as it is only her 2nd year. mylittleranchhand.com is her website.

Thanks again for the welcome
