"Hey, Cody. Good to see another Kentuckian. Hey, I don't know enough about Eastern KY (except the fact that Morehead embarrassed Louisville last year in the tourney) and the farming out there. Do you know anyone who tiles? Contractors or farmers?"

"Kentucky life is good in most aspects, but there is some pretty bad stuff going on. I think more people have gardens out this year than last year, and mine is doing well. I'm also seeing an increase in commercial producers and farmers markets.…"

Supply Exchange Thread

If there is not a thread already devoted to exchanging information on supply purchasing and location I would like to start one here. I’m hoping to grow an acre of white half runner beans next year, but lake much of the physical capital I need. I was wondering if any one had any information on where I can get bushel baskets, or instructions on how to make them.Right now I know I need:10,000 Bushel baskets5, 280ft+ of natural fiber cordage, pencil thick, preferably hemp.4,056+ Cain/bamboo polls…See More

Good culture is in the callused hand.

My name is Cody. I’m from Magoffin County in Eastern Kentucky. Right now I’m studying horticulture at Morehead State University in north eastern Kentucky. Farming goes back through my Family all the way back to the Cherokee. I’ve never lived on a profit based farm, but my family has raised vegetables and animals for food for many years. I’ve been growing organic vegetables for the past two years. Most of the stuff I grow is for my own consuming, but I do sell a few hot peppers to local Mexican restaurant. I hope to some day buy a farm were I spent part of my child hood, and start full scale commercial production then. My plan is to service restaurants and grocery stores within a fifty mile radius of the farm, and set up a road side stand in Salyersville, which is the county seat.
Aside from Agriculture I’m interested in forestry and medicinal plants. I spend most of my free time walking in the woods and studying the local plant life. I also like to fish, and coon hunt. I’m also involved with Appalachian based social and environmental groups who are trying to put and end to mountain top removal coal mining.

one thing I did not mention, was that Wal-Mart has sucked the life out of local small retail businesses...

I enjoyed looking at your new pictures on here.

That by-pass has been there for about 10 years now and there has been some business move out towards it, but it has not dried up the traffic flow through town. The by-pass has so many red lights and is so far around that most people just go on through town! Russellville has also experienced quite a bit of in-town redevelopment especially over the past 2 or 3 years as the farm economy has been doing so well.

I got a new chainsaw for Christmas, so I'm very excited about that!

thanks! did you have a good Christmas? I have not been over in eastern KY since back in July, and I only drove through then. I stayed down in Middlesboro for a couple of weeks and hiked around in Cumberland Gap quite a bit. It is really beautiful country over there. It has been about 3 years since I have been over towards Salyersville though.

Seems like were on the same page! GMO's scare me and limit my food consumption. I don't like eating them and they seem to be in everything now that sugar beets have been approved and grown. Just keep on growing good healthy food and spread the word.
