Smith Farms

My wife Melissa and I live on her family farm in God's Country (Mills County, IA). We were both born and raised on diversified family farms. My father-in-law farms corn and soybeans while I raise corn, soybeans, and cattle. We are a typical diversified farm with corn, soybeans, hay, and beef cows. We have a cross bred herd that I continually try to improve.......I love the cow/calf business. I am a 6th generation farmer on Smith Farms. I am sure it is the same as many of you......will do whatever it takes to maintain and continue the six generation family tradition.

I graduated from Iowa State in the spring of 2005 and was lucky enough to move back to my stomping grounds. I resigned from my full time job in January 2011 to take over the reins of the farm.

We are always looking for ways to network with others involved in production ag. Feel free to drop us a line!

February 1st - 18th

Posted on February 18, 2012 at 2:39pm 0 Comments

February – Where has the month of February gone? With the non-typical winter we have been having, I have tried to take advantage of getting caught up on out door activities. I have hauled over 5000 bushel of corn and 2000 bushel of soybeans early in the month. We did get a bunch of snow early in the month and I am glad I got everything delivered before the weather set in.…

January 24th – I worked in the office before going outside. It seems I can’t get caught up at my desk no matter what time of year. The weather is going to be unseasonably warm the next week, so instead of putting ground hay and MWDG out for the cows, I went ahead and filled both 250 gallon lick tanks with syrup. Hopefully our winter feed bill will continue to stay low this year.…

January 28th - 31st

January28th – 31st – The weather has been incredibly nice for quite a while. It has been in the 50’s and 60’s a couple of days. Absolutely unreal. The frost is coming out of the ground, and what frost is there isn’t much. I had 22 ton of mineral shipped in yesterday. Needless to say the shop is full. It is time for me to start selling it.

Due to the…

Our pioneer is doing very well. You guys plant later season corn than us it sounds like. I have heard nothing but great things about 33D49. I want to try some but we are from 104-113 day corn. Hope your stuff does well.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad to hear that you're not pushing your recovery. Youre smart not to. It would really suck to sit and watch harvest go by. Good luck with it all and a speedy recovery!

Well we have had your inch and then another. We have had two inches in the past two days, pretty muddy around here now. We still have about 100 acres of wheat to topdress, as well as some fertilzer to put on the corn ground. I am sure it will all get done...but its very busy here too! Take care and you have a safe spring season!

Hey Brady, how are things up your way? Hopefully you have a safe planting season. We hope to start here in another week or so....depending on when it rains!
