GO HOKIES!

Latest Activity

My suggestion is to visit, visit, visit. You really can start from scratch BUT you can't have every bell and whistle to start (if ever) and you need to avoid as many mistakes as possible.

Eric...I do know some folks that have done it. Jim Atwell is a friend of mine that is a Colonel in the Reserves. He really likes it. I can get you in touch with him if you'd like to talk to him (or email him) directly. One thing to think about is...

This comment by Ms. Guntherie angers me. Farming is no longer hitchen the horses to the plow and throwing some seeds out there. Some of the most saphisticated technologies in the world are used by farmers everyday. DNA, too sophisticated? What abo...

It is a common mistake to think that inheriting a farm is "platter" material. In many ways it is tougher...your industry and equipment lines, facilities, etc. can fence you in literally and figuratively. Farm start from scratch....case in point.....

We have an extension office that is regionally based but in the county I live in. Our extension office hosts field days, or has 2-3 hour informational panels. I go to them but they are not extrememly informative as I tend to already keep up on th...

No more calls please! We have a winner.......well so to speak!

That's right farm sports fans....Mike's Discussion Post...."Could you do it?" has been awarded the "Most Irate Response" Award. This comes as no shock to those of us who saw his post win the Andy Overbay "You're about a Dumb@^%" Award earlier yesterday!

How many of you noticed that Mike added to my earlier post about stereotypes when he assumed that the person that handed your farm down on a silver platter was male (Remember....father, grandfather, etc.?) Seems someone forgot to mention to Mike… Continue

The Stereotypical Farmer

Good morning FFTF....

Have you ever been (or felt you have been) looked down upon because you were a farmer? Our image used to be one of the community's "white hat" but that gets a little dirtier every day. Savannah Gutherie, NBC News' White House Correspondent used to be a reporter for Court TV. Here is what I personally heard her blurt out during the coverage of an Idaho murder trial on June 17, 2004.....

"The prosecution made a real mistake by introducing DNA evidence in this case. TheseContinue

Well if you flew over, I bet you saw a whole lot of nothing-ness around my corner of Nevada, ha! Whenever I fly back East out of San Fran. I can spot our farm here, pretty cool.

Hello Andy. I was a Hokie for exactly one year, until I decided I preferred working in the sagebrush (rangeland management) to working in the trees (forestry). Great school!

Welcome aboard Andy! Glad you enjoy the Fastline! I've always wondered - what exactly is a Hokie?

Wow, that sounds fascinating! I think I know what you mean, though, in terms of stereotyping in the ag industry. I myself have heard too many times people say "I'm just a farmer." That's too bad! I'm always amazed with the folks I meet -- I truly think there are farmers out there who are geniuses, literally.

So, if you're a 3-time Hokie, then surely you've worked with Dr. Kohl, right? Great guy -- I've visited with him several times. I never had Dr. Flinchbaugh as a student at K-State (my alma mater), but I've gotten to be friends with him since school, and I've always gotten a kick out of how he and Dr. Kohl rib each other. Two "big dogs," for sure!

Well hey, great to meet you, Andy. Keep in touch -- I'd enjoy learning more about your work! Maybe we could work on some content down the road, too.

Hey, you have a great evening, Andy.

Hello, Andy. Saw you mentioned your Ph.D. on another fellow's page. Where did you study? Would like to learn more about your dissertation. Sounds very cool!

Welcome to the group here. If you ever have any questions or suggestions for the group, by all means, drop me a line!

Have a great evening, Andy!
