"I guess my question is ( realized I didn't put one) is what would be a fair price to get paid for farming the alfalfa.  I am thinking $35-40 for every ton the get and maybe peg it to current hay prices."

Hi All,

My partner Paula and I are small organic/Biodynamic farmers in Mendocino County, California. We manage a winter CSA (Dec.-April), run 50 ewes, a few cows, and raise poultry during the spring/summer/fall (broilers and turkeys).

Currently, we farm 5 acres of vegetables and just planted a quarter acre of fruit trees-mostly stone fruit. We just started leasing 40 acres of irrigated summer pasture and are looking to expanding our sheep flock to 150-200 ewes. We might also expand our veg production and grow a few more acres of small grain, dry beans, and/or feed corn.

Thanks Adam. I'll look into that. We'd love to have a high tunnel to expand our growing season.

Hey Adam, I was wondering if you were still interested in some organic hay.... We have awesome hay and our price is 135/ton in the barn. If you are interested let me know we have tests on some of it right now so if you wanna know any numbers I can provide em. Thanks a lot and if you know anyone else let them know as well I appreciate it.

So I talked to my uncle and he's saying he wants 180/ton not delivered if you can find someone to haul it and the price is okay with you then we have about 11 loads or so to get rid of.... We usually sell to a local dairy here in Klamath Falls and we usually do our own hauling to the dairy but we have farm plates on our rigs so we can't haul into California... So let me know yes, no, or maybe

Aaaaaaand already I love you guys! It's so great to meet other people as passionate and active in the community as you. I lived in Rhode Island before coming here where people talk a lot about the importance of supporting local farmers and being active in the agriculture community ... but there's not a lot of practice what you preach if ya catch my drift.
I LOVE that you guys are doing an RSA!!! I grew up in Maine and farm to plate is taking off like a mad man up there. Hopefully it's spread like wildfire all over the northeast :)

Hey Adam! Thanks so much! Right now I think we have about 40 shares set up, but they're still coming in and we're so excited people are signing up. We'll also be at weekend markets in Richmond starting next month. The weather's been so up and down over the last month, so nothing's in the ground yet. I'm hoping for the fields to dry out over the next week ... if the rain doesn't come.
We've got about 20 hens for purely selfish reasons (gotta love those fresh eggs in the morning!) and a coon hound, but that's all she wrote for animals.

So what keeps you guys busy after the winter?

Wow that sounds great. As far as compost goes its pretty scary here in southern ontario too. We could use a few more animals here.
I'd love to peak at your numbers when you figure it out.
Happy weeding it all snow here.
