Due to an extremly late year, harvest is about half way over with. As a result heavy harrowing is not going to happen this year on a number of fields, low temp. So i was wondering, what it is that anyone else does on a year like this to help with breakdown on heavy straw Irr wheat. Particulary in on solid stem wheats. (burning is a poor option as we are in windy country)

Hey all just wondered how crop harvest is progressing. Just got back from a travel across Kansas and I saw several combines running in corn, a few combines in beans. We have not started yet, but a few neighbors tried. Still around 17-20 so I think we will start next week. Also start drilling wheat sometime towards the end of this month.

We use a crop roatation with cover crops, but we still do use a burndown in our no-till. We have gone away from fallow acres completely due to more available moisture in our soils.

I am curious how many folks here are using no-til WITHOUT herbicides and a heavier crop/fallow/cover crop rotation rather than JUST no-till and spray.

We started no-tilling when my Dad graduated from college in 1981 and returned to farm with my grandfather. We farm just over 1,000 acres(ALL NO-TILL) and it is a practice that could allow us to farm 3,000 with the equipment we have right now. Not only does no-till reduce runoff, control erosion, but it allows the farmer to put more money in his/ her pocket. We make less trips over the field than conventional till, we try to run only when conditions are fit, therefore minimizing compaction, and hopefully, increasing our profit.

Once upon a time a BASF Rep stopped by our farm to try to sell my father and grandfather on the concept of No-Till. My grandfather said it would never work but it sparked something inside my father and he gave it a shot. In fact he was one of the first in the state of Wisconsin and now 30 years later we are still practicing no-till as with the rest of you and other farmers around the world. Just goes to show that innovation is key in our industry as well as environmental stewardship. With no-till we can increase soil erosion control, reduce run-off as well as reduce the amount of green house gas emissions put into our atmosphere.

Exactly the same situation here in northcentral Mo. We are one good drying day away from planting.......rain in the forecast......again.

We are still wet here in Western KS. Rained last night and again tonight. Still have more to plant, cant get much done when it rains every 4 days. So frustrating! About the time its dry enough to plant, it rains that day and we are back to square one.

same here, wet. We still have about 250 acres of corn and about 200 acres of beans to plant. Rains about every five days, good for what is in the ground and the wheat....but frustrating to try and get it planted.
