Hello everyone, how are things in your area?  Here in NW Kansas we have been lucky to get some timely rains.  So far the fall crops seem to be hanging on well, mostly due to the humid days we have had in July...we had alot of 100+ degree days then.  I think that we have proved the value of no-till in our area.  Farmers in my area no-tilling have good corn that isnt hurting for moisture and the conventional till guys down the road have pretty much lost their crop.  I know it got them wondering about no-till.  Just wondering how things are going around the country.

Has anybody else had trouble running a bourgault no-till into corn stubble?

Yes I agree, ever year we see better tilth and soil health.  Compaction is not a problem like it used to be.  Many times we are able to get into the fields with our combines or planters when the neighbors cannot.  I have a question does anyone use any warm weather cover crops?  I am looking at planting some if I have enough moisture after wheat harvest.

No till for 3 years here. Switched before I read it was the new "in thing". I switched after being perplexed over how amazing the soil in my flower beds got year after year when I do NOTHING to it while my field soils weren't improving. VERY noticeable difference in soil health now. The difference is AMAZING.

Yeah I think we are going to use some radish in the mix but planting a legume cover crop to build some N as well as organic matter.

we had a piece of ground that when we planted it only about half of it came up, so we went in there and planted turnips and radishes u  the spots that didnt come up, it was perdy amazing of how big they got, we combined the corn, and then turned the cattle out on them, we had herd that the cattle would eat the radishes and turnips but really they didn't, just stayed in the corn,  looks like if you wanna open up the soil they would, work, they stink when they rot thow

@ michael

Maybe you could try using radish as a cover crop? I dont know much about it myself but a couple of farms around my area use that after they graze stalks.

So does anyone graze cornstalks and then plant cover crops to deal with any compaction from grazing? I am looking at doing that this year to improve a peice of ground that we have that is very low in fertility.

Im interested in converting our operation to mostly no till, after seeing over the years the fields disappearing into nearby ponds/ditches etc, we farm around 750 acres of corn and soybeans and some winter wheat, all wheat is no till and most of the beans are also no till, but corn on the other hand is always worked, we use a john deere 7200 series 6 row planter, what modifications are needed to effectively plant no-till corn?
