Farmers || Future

Being that i am only 18 years old. I am really still a kid, but i believe that i can take on things that adults do. Like getting a job....... PROBLEM. I want to work a job while i am in college but yet, dad wants me to stay on the farm and claims he'll pay me. Every time a talk about, or even think of taking on an off farm job, dad pretty much throws a fit about it. He told me that i have to finish what i started. Well i started a career path to be a mechanic, but yet makes me feel like he doesn't want to try to find a job in my area of study. I feel that i am finished what i have started on the farm and can easily be cared for while i am not around while i finish the other part of what i have started.

  So, what do i do? Do i ride this out and see of dad will really pay me. Or do i let him throw his fit and start looking for jobs? I mean no disrespect to my mom and dad, but this is something i want to do. They both told to follow my dreams but, i am getting close to starting my dreams and they get mad at me because i'm leaving. I'm just so confused on what i should or shouldn't do. I'm almost to the point where i'm going to say screw college, and some how come up with the money to get my CDL and start calling custom harvest crews.

Any feed back would be great.

Thanks

This is what I have always been told by my brother. No matter what you do your parents will never agree or be happy with your decesion. So I would follow your dream and become a mechanic and your parents will be disappointed, but yet they will get over eventually.  But if you chose to stay at the farm, you should get something in writing from your parents that they will pay you so much a week/month and you both sign it and i would have a witness, that is not family. Or if your a dairy farm you could have your dad put you at a milk check assignment, and you get a eprcentage of each milk check that goes directly to you. Good luck with whatever you chose. I went against my parents wish and they were made anow they over it...

What did you start, that you arent going to finish? Do you own land, do you rent farm ground? do you raise crops? Do you have livestock? As long as you have no ties to the farm itself except through family then you have nothing to hold you there.

We grow hydroponic fruits and veggies. My SAE project in ag was growing strawberries. That is what i have started. That is the only thing have to my name besides my truck. That is the only tie i have. But if i can get a job else where. I can good insurance on my own truck myself. Right now i am just getting enough production off the strawberries to put gas in my truck to drive to school everyday.  I feel that i personally have accomplished the study on strawberries, and it is ready to be taken over by my dad, and brother while i go to college and set further plans to make a living on my own.

AS far as im concerned its your parents responsibility to help you get to where you need to be in life as long as its not a total hindrance of what your parents are trying to accomplish, or a detriment on their way of life. If the strawberries are the only thing holding you back then i would look towards college as the past to your future. People just cant get very far in life these days without some kind of a degree, a Bachelors is the minimum in my opinion or a Technical degree like you were talking about with being a mechanic. Anybody can go out from high school and make minimum wage, but its hard for them to ever get past that. If you want to have good job placement and work at a place where you can move up and continue to make more money then going to college is the only way to do so.

There is nothing that can beat an education. Even if you are to go and get a degree or a diploma, you can call it quits on a job and come back to the farm. Once you have that education, no one can take that away from you and it is something to fall back on if the farm doesnt work. The farm is there after education, but education isnt there after the farm.

Tell them i'll come work for them :P

I was somewhat in that same situation but my dad respected my decision to go off to college (went for diesel mechanic too).   He knew that clipping my wings so to speak would just make me want to stay away so he encouraged me to go and above all be young.  We live in a rural area of course and not a lot to do on weekends.  I had an inkling I would want to move back when I settled down but I was going to check out every fork in the road and eventually it led me back to working with dad and grandpa on the farm.  So my advice is to sit down with them and have a heart to heart.

Having a heart to heart with my dad is rather hard to do because he's ALWAYS on the phone. I would like to stay here, but I'm getting tired of dad making promises that he's not keeping. He's done this for years and i've tried to tell him about it. He just doesn't listen. So i told him, For winter quart i'm taking a job and renting a house with some friends. ( i didn't tell i prolly won't come back the following summer). My dad has taught me to have an open mind and well, he's the one that doesn't have an open mind and i feel that he's trying to keep me from following my dreams. So I'm making my plans now to hopefully go work with Jeremy Williams. I guess now its a hurry up and wait game and we'll see what happens..

go to school, get an education, and do what you want to do. if you stay at home your parents will always be able to controll what you can and cant do.

this is true.
