I'm currently at a crossroads in my life. After being out of school for a couple years, I'd like to finish up and get my degree. I'm an animal science major, and that's what I'd truly love to get my degree in. It's what I'm most passionate about, and being around livestock is pretty much second nature to me. But I recently moved to the central coast of California, and there isn't much of a job market here for a livestock major. The main focus in agriculture around here are wine grapes, vegetable crops, and they really doesn't interest me much. I have been cruising job boards in search of livestock type careers/jobs in other areas of the state and country, and I haven't come across very many. Or are there more jobs out there than I'm finding? So my question is, is it worth it to get my degree in animal science (what I love) or should I be realistic and switch to another major such as a crop science or viticulture? Thanks for any input/advice.

Have you looked at this site?   http://feedstuffs.com/ME2/dirsect.asp?sid=F8913E6D25E44A3C9AD8E7459...

I get the newsletter of job postings and it seems there is always somethign there that AnSci would be good for.

A degree is a degree regardless of what it is in. Thats the first thing to do and the first thing people look at.

You AS degree is first and for most a degree.  Get it done!!!!    I hire a lot of people and outside of the first job I really dont care about the degree,  How you perform in that first role sets the stage.  I would get the degree and then try and get hired on by one of the big boys in feed and nutrition.  Then you can gat a look at all kinds of different careers from the inside that can feed you passion and you wallet.

I'd finish the degree. I live in Wisconsin and seed sales internships are big here. So if i were you i'd try and get an internship while in school and that will set you up for experience and maybe get your foot in the door at the company and/or form relationships and have connections. Its who you know not necessarily what you know.
