gps connected to cell for better accuracy

Can anybody help me out on this? I didn't catch all the story but I thought I heard something about some people hooking cell phones in to the gps in the tractor for increased accuracy. Is this possible? will it work with a netbook? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes, this is a new thing that has just recently happened. I talked to a dealer that uses cellular service with the gps for land leveling. A netbook would work just fine. The dealer said that what is most commonly used is any type of lap top with a wifi card from AT&T or verizon so you will have Internet in your tractor from your lap top which will also be running the gps which is only for rtk sub inch accuracy. You can also use the Internet from a cell phone, a Trimble nomad handheld device, or have a cellular modem installed into your tractor. The best thing about cellular gps is that you do not have to be within so many miles of a base station because the cell service receives the signal that you need. Also the worry of not getting cell service is an issue but from what the dealer told me, you only need one tenth of a bar of signal for it to work so basically is you can send a text message, you will have your rtk service. thank you for the information. finally got a hold of someone yesterday about it well kind of. the guy that does the gps around here is at a training school or something??? Not a very good time of the year to be having that i wouldnt think. He will be back friday. thanks again n i will post any updates .

How does subscription cost compare to omni star correction? We have no need for sub inch accuracy. But waiting for convergance in the event of the old man moving the damn tractor to fuel it up... is a major time kill. To my knowlege there is NO wait with rtk?

upon trying to find out more about this , there is a lot more to this than i could have imagined . you first have to be rtk capable and have the tech unlocked or basically pay them a lot more money. Having no rtk service around southern indiana its gonna take some convincing to get the older generation going for this . the way its looking now leaning more towards trimble . looks like they are the most advanced tech out there is this so any better??????????????????

Yes your gps has to be rtk capable and the amount you would pay all depends on the dealer. The Trimble dealer I talked too said that rtk can be paid for daily, monthly or yearly in our area. Trimble is by far the most advanced in this technology. John Deere is trying it out in Europe but it has not been used in the u.s. I believe that it is possible with auto farm but I would go with trimble since they seem to know the most about it

You might visit with other producers in your area and set up your own RTK Network.  In my area this was recent achieved without a large expense to any one individual.  The range seems to be +-12 miles for sub-inch with no annual subscriptions after the initial investment.  I have watched a few YouTube videos on the CORS network using MojoRTK.  You might find that helpful as well.  It is a large investment that takes research specific to your area.

From everything i have seen if it is available using the DOT CORS network is the most cost effective RTK available. The best way to get on it is to instead of using an actual cell phone get a whats called an RTK modem it does the same thing as a cellphone by accessing a website to get the correction. The major difference is that you will get better reception with a modem because it will have a more powerful cell antenna.

^^^ Agreed. Do you guys use this system? We looked into it, but decided we didn't want to spend the extra cash to go to the ParaDyme ag leader reciever.

yes it is possible minnesota has it. its called a cors network they put RTK base station about 35 miles apart and you need three of them to make the triangulation and have to be in the triangle to work but they you just dial into the system from your cell phone. the signal is free but you have to have a phone with a data plan and software that is the costly part.  hope that helps.
