Full Moon tonight - Babies Coming?

At Alpaca Farmgirl, we've been talking about how the full moon seems to affect the birthing process. What do you think? In December we had a cria (baby alpaca) born early in the morning after the full moon.

Tonight is going to be a full moon. The largest and brightest one of 2009. Let me know if you have any babies (livestock or human) this weekend. Or if you expect the full moon to bring on the babies on your farm. I'm fascinated by this topic!

That is so cool! Thanks for your response. It has been too overcast and rainy for us to see the full moon here. But I love hearing about it from those of you who can see it.

I don't have any yet but have a doe goat due this month so we will see what happens. She is a fiest timer so it wil be intresting to see what happens.

Hi Katy,
I used to be a childbirth educator and birth doula. The L&D nurses and midwives I worked with definitely noticed the corollation. Full moons and low barometric pressure periods. Water starts breakin' all over the place! Surely the critters feel it, too?

I thought we would get some too this time, with two due, but one girl waited til yesterday. (A few days after the full moon) And I'm still waiting on the other one. At least it gives me a reason to rush out to the barn with a little more pep in my step at 6AM after the full moon.

Hey there,
I think the coming of the full moon brings on the birthing activity as well as the full of the moon itself, we have had numerous births in the 2 weeks prior to a full moon. If it can have an effect on the tides....of course it affects us as well.

I have actually never really paid any attention to it, but my husband swears by it. He has noticed that we have more heifers calving when we have a full moon than other times of the month. I will try to make a point to see what happens in April. He also says that when the barometric pressure changes he can tell becuase the cows change behavior and he says we have more calves then also. Actually, I have been overhearing him and the hired man talking about it. He really watches the behavior of the cows and he will make comments about how the weather is going to be in the next day or so. I never keep track. How interesting that you all are commenting on this.
