Looking at some 200+ gallon diesel fuel tanks to be placed in the bed of our service truck.  We're finding some that say their DOT certified and some that are not however they look the same.  What does the DOT cert. part mean?  Does it really matter for farm use if the tank meets DOT guidelines or whatever?

Check with the state, in Mi. you can't haul more than 119gal., I think that's the amount, without having a hazardous endorsement on your license..  Also check to see if you need placards when hauling that much..
Same as troy, in Kansas, tanks have to be under 119 gallons. Though you can haul more then 119 gallons as long as the individual tanks aren't larger then 119 gallons. I had a DOT guy tell me you can haul as many 119 gallon tanks hooked together in series as you wanted as long as they had shut offs in between them.
What about a fuel tank wagon?  Around here people are using old anhydrous tanks as fuel tanks.  they hold about 1,000 gallon, and i dont believe anyone has a hazmat endorsement...

Same DOT guy said that hauling in bulk, i could pull a 5,000 gallon tanker as long as it was in between fields....though he did mention that if i happened to stop in town and fill it up and then brought it back to the farm that as long as i said i was in between fields there wasen't anything they could do.

Im not sure what the difference between a tanker and just hauling it in tanks on the pickup are though.......

Yeah, The 119 gallon rule applies for us too in ND, but you can have as many tanks as you want. Kind of silly if you ask me. But in all honesty, who's going to check how many gallons you can haul. Especially between a 119 gallons and 200 gallons, the tank isn't going to look that much different.
I usually figure that as long as you aren't causing a threat to public safety and are just going from field to field most law enforcement will leave you alone.
