I have a dog that I got about 8 months ago.  He was already 2 years old when I got him.  Last month right after thanksgiving my wife and I were out of town and my parents were taking care of him.  During that time he disappeared.  We thought he might have been killed somewhere, but this week we found out that he had wandered down the road three miles into town and somebody there had taken care of him for 2 or 3 weeks and then sent him to the pound where I had to pay $75 to get him out of.  I brought him back home, but now that he knows the way he keeps going back into town.  There is another dog in town that I found him running with, and I forgot to check but I am guessing it is a female.  Is there any way to break him from leaving and going to town?  I would rather give him to someone else than keep him tied up if there is no way to break him.  He is a good dog, but he is meant to be an asset not a liability and headache.

You could try a petsafe wireless fence.  They are a little spendy.  I put one on my dog and left it on him for about 6 months and I have only had to put it on him twice in the last six months.  I live right off of a major highway and he hasn't even come close to the road since using this device.  Its a heck of a lot easier to use than an in-ground fence.

Is he neutered? If not, that might help.

That's tough. Like john said get him nutted. I have a chocolate lab from when he was 4 months, and the younger and longer there around the better dog ull have.. mine dosent leave my side I take him on the farm everyday hes a great companion
