Currently I am planting sweet yellow clover into my spring crops, this is a great combination for me becasue it comes up in my millet but only at ground level durning harvest. This field sits in stubble over the winter then in early spring the clover takes off in the course of two-three weeks. Great legume and ground cover..... Currently I am working it back into the soil, however, I am considering planting slightly heavy and haying the clover. My question is does a yellow clover market exsist for dairy mix??? I have herd they mix a percent into their feed with those grinder tubs. Thoughts?

Permalink Reply by Shawn on i have heard if you bale clover before it fully cures out, it will turn to rat poisen... the neighbor guy bought some cheap feed and it was killing his cows, they found it was clover not cured out enough i believe. thats about all i know on clover and dairy cattle...
i spread crimson clover in a growing corn field mid june this year. it is about 8 inches tall in some spots, mostly 4-6. the corn is just getting matured out here though, so i am interested to see what it will do when it gets some sunlight.
Permalink Reply by Bryce Hediger on Yea I am finding that out as well, its very important that you do not bail before its cured or else it molds which is toxic to cows. I think you will be happy with the clover, we find it usually adds about 40lb of nitrogen on dry land @ 2-3lb and acre seeding. The only thing we have to be carful for is that it doesn't grow to tall, it becomes hard to kill at a certain point.
